Parasitic Infections: What They Are, How They Affect Us, and What We Can Do About Them

Hi Beautiful,

Let’s talk about something we don’t often like to think about: parasites.

I did not want to go too dark on the illustration for this article :) (and yes this belly car be infected)

I remember growing up, it was totally normal for parents to give their kids a parasite cleanse once a year—just as a preventative. But now that I’m living in another part of the world, I rarely hear anyone talk about it. That’s what inspired me to look into it again and do a little check-in.

It might sound like something that only happens in faraway places or to other people—but the truth is, parasitic infections can (and do) happen to anyone, no matter where you live. And yes, women can experience unique symptoms when these little invaders set up camp in the body.

This isn’t about fear—it’s about awareness and self-care. So, let’s gently break it down: what parasites are, how they affect us, and what we can do to support our bodies naturally.

What Are Parasites?

Parasites are organisms that live in or on another organism (you!) and take nutrients at your expense. Common ones in humans include:

  • Roundworms (nematodes)

  • Tapeworms

  • Giardia (often from water)

  • Pinworms (common in children)

They often spread through contaminated water, undercooked food, travel exposure, or even from pets.

Signs of a Parasitic Infection

Symptoms can vary widely and sometimes mimic other conditions, which is why parasites often go unnoticed.

Possible signs include:

  • Digestive issues: bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea

  • Unexplained fatigue or “wired but tired” energy

  • Sugar cravings (parasites love sugar)

  • Skin issues (rashes, itching, hives)

  • Mood swings, anxiety, or irritability

  • Sleep issues or teeth grinding at night

  • Unexplained weight loss or inability to gain weight

For women specifically, chronic parasite exposure may also affect hormone balance by increasing inflammation and nutrient depletion—both of which are key to healthy cycles.

How to Know for Sure

If you suspect a parasite, talk to a healthcare provider about:

  • Stool testing (for worms, eggs, and protozoa)

  • Blood work (in rare cases, certain parasites show up in blood tests)

Functional medicine providers also offer comprehensive gut testing for hard-to-detect infections.

Supporting Your Body (Parasite Detox 101)

Important note: If you have a known infection, always consult a professional—some parasites require specific medications.

However, for general prevention and gentle support, these steps can help:

1. Boost Digestive Health

  • Eat fiber-rich foods to keep things moving

  • Support stomach acid (lemon water, apple cider vinegar)

  • Probiotics for a healthy gut environment

2. Herbal Allies (with guidance)

  • Wormwood

  • Black walnut hull

  • Cloves (yep, our old friend!) These are often used in natural parasite cleanses—but only under professional guidance, especially if pregnant or breastfeeding.

3. Cut the Sugar

Parasites thrive on sugar and processed carbs. Reduce their “fuel source” while boosting whole, nutrient-rich foods.

4. Hydration & Detox Support

Drink filtered water and support liver detox with cruciferous vegetables, herbs like dandelion or milk thistle, and plenty of rest.

5. Good Hygiene

Wash hands often, especially after pet handling or gardening, and ensure meats are thoroughly cooked.

Final Thought: Awareness Is Empowering

Parasites aren’t something to panic about—but they are something to be aware of.

Your body is resilient and capable of healing, especially when you listen to its signals and nourish it with love.

So, if your gut feels “off” or your energy is constantly low, consider exploring the possibility of parasites—not with fear, but with curiosity and compassion for your body.

Because caring for yourself deeply—even at the gut level—is an act of self-love.
